The Vice-Chancellor congratulates Prof. Stephen Gitahi Kiama on his appointment as the Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences with effect from Monday April 11, 2016.
Prior to his appointment, he was the Director of Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies. He has previously also served as the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for seven years (2003 – 2010).
Prof. Kiama holds a PhD degree in Structural Biology from the University of Bern, Switzerland. He obtained his Bachelors of Veterinary Medicine and Masters of Veterinary Anatomy from the University of Nairobi.
He has authored over 100 journal and conference publications, with over 60 in reputable scientific journals i.e journal of Leukocyte Biology, Immunology and cell Biology, American Journal of Pathology, American Journal of Respiratory, cell and Molecular Biology.
He is also the Coordinator of the African Natural Product training Network. (Rise – AFNNET) involving three Universities from East Africa, (Makerere, Sokoine and University of Nairobi).
The program has sponsored 16 PhD and MSc graduates with scholarships.

Dr. Nasimolo attended the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on “Lung Development, Injury and Repair” in New Hampshire, USA from 15th -21st August, 2015.
He made a seminar presentation in Louisiana State University (LSU) Veterinary school on the 10th September 2015, through an invitation from Prof. Arthur Penn.
His trip for to the conference was sponsored through the Carnegie Fund for Conference attendance (CFCA), while visit to Louisiana State University (LSU) Veterinary School was funded by LSU, Department of Comparative Biological Sciences.

Njoki got the opportunity to train under the mentorship of Dr. Venant Tchokonte-Nana at the Islet Research Laboratory, Division of Anatomy and Histology, Stellenbosch University from 1st August to 30th September, 2015; Courtesy of the African Academy of Sciences Mentorship Program on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine. The focus of her training was on protocols for regenerating pancreatic islet cells as a possible source of donor cells for transplantation in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Postdoc fellow Joseph Mwanzia Nguta from Kenya talks about his research into the antituberculosis properties of various plants traditionally used in Ghana to treat respiratory problems. His research in this neglected field has led to some exciting discoveries. Nguta also explains why postdoc programmes are so vital if African scientists are going to be able to compete globally. The RISE-AFNNET fellows conference took place on September 11th 2015 at Imperial Royale Hotel,Kampala, Uganda.Those in attendance from the Nairobi node include Prof.Kiama S.G,Prof.Gakuya,D.W,Dr.Catherine Kaluwa,Dr.Ochwang'i Dominic,Mr.Micheni Kiraithe,Mrs.Kamau Loise,Dr.Serem J.K and Mr.Musau J.K.Each of the students gave a thrilling presentation of their research at the conference.

Carnegie Fund for Conference Attendance (CFCA) Partners,
We wish to announce the 2nd call for applications to the Carnegie Fund for Conference Attendance (CFCA). Applications with a deadline to submit materials to IIE by October 30, 2015. We have an updated FAQ sheet, application form, recommendation forms (I & II), and budget form (attached); and. IIE will continue to respond to inquiries at the CFCA inbox as regards eligibility, status of submitted applications, and the selection process overall.
We are looking forward to another productive selection in December 2015. The awardees to date have shown themselves on the whole very appreciative of the chance to attend and present at international conferences.

The World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowships
Program 2015 Call for Active PhD Candidates.
The Award: Up to US$25,000 for a 610 month period starting between July and December 2015 to travel to a host institution located in a World Bank member country to conduct development-related PhD research under the supervision of a research advisor. Introducing the Carnegie Fund for Conference Attendance.
The Corporation’s board of trustees recently approved a grant for the Carnegie Fund for Conference Attendance (CFCA), a competitive fund to support African beneficiaries of Corporation-supported postgraduate degree and postdoctoral programs to present papers at major international conferences. A list of eligible Corporation-supported programs is attached. Since 2008, the Corporation’s primary strategy in Africa has been to assist in the development and retention of the next generation of African academics through support for African universities, postgraduate training networks, and fellowship programs. Close to 1,000 fellows at masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels have received support. This fund is meant to enable a selection of those fellows who have papers accepted for presentation at major international conferences to heighten their visibility within their disciplines and expand their professional networks. Dr. James Kuria attended the Seminar on Traditional Chinese Medicine for African English-speaking Countries; 13th October to 11th November, 2014 through the nomination of the Ministry of Devolution and Planning through KEMRI and the sponsorship of the Economic and Commercial Ministry of the People’s Republic of China and Xiyuan Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The seminar gave the participants a theoretical background and some clinical application of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) including basic training of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to therapy. Catherine Kaluwa, a PhD student from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, talks about the journey she has taken from walking barefoot to school to researching the efficacy of plants that women in her homeland have traditionally taken for family planning. She also outlines some of the challenges she has faced as a female researcher working in a male-dominated profession.

TWAS, The World Academy of Science is now accepting applications for the Research and Advanced Training Fellowship Programme. The deadline to apply is 1 October 2014.
These fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centers of excellence in various developing countries.

Catherine Kaingu Kaluwa grew up in the remote, drought-prone Tana River County of Kenya. Her mother was a teacher who never stopped pushing her eight children to get as much education as they could. “She said she could not give us much,” recalls Catherine, whose county is among the poorest in Kenya, “because the family struggled to support me and my seven brothers and sisters.” The sparsely inhabited county is divided between nomadic and farming tribes, who often come to blows; efforts at development have been stymied by conflict and by flooding of the Tana River.
