UoN hosts Seminar on the Legacy of JM Kariuki
The University of Nairobi, through the Department of History and Archaeology, hosted a distinguished seminar reflecting on the life, political history, and enduring legacy of Josiah Mwangi Kariuki (JM Kariuki) – 50 years after his assassination.
The event, held at the University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, brought together historians, scholars, students, and members of JM Kariuki’s family to explore his impact on Kenya’s political landscape and the relevance of his ideals in shaping the nation’s future.
Prof. Kenneth Ombongi, Associate Dean of the faculty, described JM Kariuki as a transformative leader whose advocacy for justice, equality, and empowerment of the marginalized remains deeply significant. “His legacy is not just history—it continues to shape our national discourse today,” he remarked.
Professor Jennifer Muchiri, speaking on behalf of the Dean Faculty of Arts and social sciences, underscored the University’s commitment to fostering intellectual discussions that preserve Kenya’s history and inspire future generations.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Kamonji Wachira, a veteran democracy and human rights advocate, delivered a powerful address, framing JM Kariuki’s life through the lens of historical injustices, political betrayal, and the struggle for a more equitable society. He urged students and scholars to critically examine the past to better understand Kenya’s political evolution.
J.M. Kariuki’s assassination in 1975 caused nationwide outrage, and the University of Nairobi played a key role in the political response. Students and lecturers protested, demanding justice and transparency from the government. His death also reinforced the university’s reputation as a center for political thought and activism.

The seminar created a space for meaningful discussions about Kenya’s history, leadership, and the important role universities play in studying and preserving the country’s past.
