The University of Nairobi has improved its position in the QS World University Rankings 2025, moving into the 901-950 band globally. This is a step up from its previous placement in the 1001-1200 range in 2024.Within Kenya, UoN continues to lead, being the highest-ranked institution in the country and holding the 18th position in Africa among 40 universities on the continent featured in this year’s rankings. This accolade highlights its pivotal role in driving academic and research innovation regionally.

The QS World University Rankings recognized globally as a reliable benchmark for higher education performance, evaluate universities across six (6) meticulously calibrated indicators. These metrics encompass academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact, international collaborations, faculty-to-student ratio, and diversity in student demographics. In its largest edition to date, the 2025 rankings analyzed 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories, emphasizing the global reach and competitiveness of institutions like UoN. The United States led the rankings with 197 institutions, followed by the United Kingdom (90) and mainland China (71). In Kenya only 2 Universities made it to the list, Kenyatta University, the only other Kenyan university included, retained its position in the 1201-1400 band, underscoring the competitive edge of UoN in the higher education landscape.

Performance Highlights and Opportunities

Academic Reputation (40%): UoN scored 10, placing it in the 601+ category. This metric reflects the university’s growing academic influence, though enhancing global visibility of its faculty’s achievements remains an area of focus.

Employer Reputation (10%): With a score of 11.7 and a ranking in the 601+ band, UoN’s graduates continue to be recognized for their readiness to meet industry demands. Strengthening ties with employers and embedding experiential learning opportunities in academic programs could further enhance this metric.

Citations per Faculty (20%): Scoring 1.8 and ranking within the 701+ category, UoN has made strides in research output. However, amplifying interdisciplinary research and accessing higher research funding remain critical to improving its impact.

International Research Network: A score of 50.1 in the 701+ band reflects UoN’s growing participation in global research initiatives. Expanding strategic collaborations with international academic and research institutions will be key to elevating this indicator.

While the 2025 rankings reflect significant progress, the University of Nairobi’s ambitions do not end here. To ascend further, the university aims to deepen its focus on impactful research, improve faculty-to-student ratios, and expand its global footprint through partnerships and student exchanges.
