UoN wins the Gender and Disability Award 2024
The University of Nairobi has emerged winner of the Gender and Disability Inclusion Award 2024 at the 9th edition of the Kenya Inclusion and Equality Awards held on December 20, 2024. The event, held at the Boma Hotel, recognized institutions and individuals championing inclusion and equality in Kenya.
The Chief Guest, Hon. Isaac Mwaura, the Government Spokesperson and a renowned advocate for disability rights, lauded the efforts of organizations like the University of Nairobi for their commitment to fostering an inclusive society. In his address, Hon. Mwaura emphasized the importance of gender equity and disability inclusion in achieving sustainable development goals. “True progress is measured by how well we embrace diversity and create opportunities for all,” he noted.
The award affirms the University of Nairobi’s dedication to promoting inclusive policies and practices that ensure equal opportunities for all, irrespective of gender or disability. Over the years, the institution has implemented various initiatives to support inclusion, including:
- Scholarship Programs: Targeted funding for students with disabilities and from marginalized groups.
- Infrastructure Improvements: Installation of accessible facilities, such as ramps, elevators, and assistive technologies across campuses.

The Kenya Inclusion and Equality Awards, an annual event, celebrates entities that demonstrate exceptional commitment to advancing social inclusion. Other winners of the evening included non-governmental organizations, corporations, and community leaders excelling in their inclusion efforts.
