On Tuesday, 19 August, delegates from China joined Kenyan representatives at the Louise Leakey Auditorium, National Museums of Kenya, for a reflective event on the legacy of World War II.

Following a welcome note from event moderator Beatrice Marshall, a speech by Mr. Shen Haixiong, President of China Media Group, was streamed to the audience. Opening remarks were then delivered by H.E. Zhang Zhizhong, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya.

In his address, H.E. Zhang Zhizhong , Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya, emphasized the importance of sovereignty, noting that “even though countries differ in terms of size, population, military strength, and economy, they come equal in the international space of the UN.” He highlighted the need to remember history—no matter how painful—while acknowledging China’s immense contribution and sacrifice during World War II. He concluded by urging participants not to abandon justice and to work together in building a peaceful future for all.

During World War II, China made a significant contribution to the global fight against fascism, enduring immense suffering while standing at the frontline of resistance against Japanese aggression. From 1937 to 1945, the Chinese people fought with resilience and determination during the Second Sino-Japanese War, which later merged into the wider global conflict. Millions of Chinese soldiers and civilians sacrificed their lives in defense of their sovereignty, while widespread atrocities such as the Nanjing Massacre highlighted the brutality of Japanese occupation. Despite the devastation, China’s prolonged resistance tied down large numbers of Japanese troops, weakening their capacity in the Pacific and making an invaluable contribution to the eventual allied victory.

Chairman of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Nairobi, Dr. Oscar M. Otele, delivered a high-level reflection on World War II.

In his address, Dr. Otele highlighted key lessons drawn from the tragedy of the war: the importance of unity and national solidarity, the pursuit of peace, the need for justice, and the value of development. He commended China’s role in advancing a multipolar global order grounded in mutual respect, noting its efforts toward a more equitable international system. Dr. Otele also underscored the growing partnership between China and Kenya, appreciating its contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.

Principal Secretary of the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications.Closing Remarks were delivered by Mr. Stephen Isaboke, EBS, He reminded the audience  the importance of never taking peace for granted, sharing a personal story about his grandfather, who was a victim of World War II. “The younger generation might think it is a long history, but in fact it is very recent,” he noted.

Mr. Isaboke further emphasized the critical role of the media, describing it as the voice of society. He highlighted the need for media institutions to remain responsive and evolving, adapting to technological advancements and shifting societal needs in order to effectively promote peace, justice, and informed dialogue in today’s world.

The event concluded with the introduction to the film ‘The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru’, a movie that highlights the powerful tribute to forgotten souls and heroes of WWII. It tells the story of the rescue of British prisoners of war by Chinese fishermen on 1st October 1942, where the armed Japanese troopship “The Lisbon Maru” was carrying 1816 British prisoners of war who had been captured by the Japanese after the Battle of Hong Kong. Blending rare footage, survivor stories, and vivid reconstructions, the film captures both the brutality of the war and the humanity that defied it.

The commemoration not only honored the sacrifices made during World War II but also served as a reminder of the shared responsibility to uphold peace, justice, and cooperation in today’s world. By revisiting history, both China and Kenya reaffirmed their commitment to fostering mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships for a more peaceful and inclusive global future.
