The Team


Prof Kiama is a graduate of University of Nairobi with Bachelors of Veterinary Medicine (1990) and Masters of Veterinary Anatomy (1995) and University of Bern, Switzerland with a Doctor of Philosophy in Structural Biology. Prof Kiama has served as a visiting researcher at St Andrews University Scotland, Free University of Berlin, University of Bern, Switzerland, and University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. In 2010, Prof Kiama received AAU staff exchange fellowships to visit the University of Ghana Legion where he facilitated in setting up an Anatomy Laboratory for their new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He also has a certificate on Laboratory animal Science from ETH, Zurich. Prof Kiama has research interests in Natural products and bioprospecting, would healing, dendritic cell biology, structure of blood vessels and structural biology. He has attended several conferences and published widely in these fields.Prof. Kiama is the current Acting Director of Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies which was established by the University of Nairobi in 2010. Previously he served as acting Dean of Faculty of Veterinary medicine in part of 2003 and 2004, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary medicine from 2003 to 2010, and as Chairman of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, University of Nairobi from 2005 to 2010. In addition, Prof. Kiama has served in various capacities in the society and university of Nairobi. He has served the editor of the Kenya Veterinaria and member of the council of Kenya Veterinary Association, chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Biennial Scientific Conference and as Chairman of the Justice Peace and Reconciliation commission, St. Andrews Parish among other responsibilities.



Professor Kabasa is the Principal of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity at Makerere University and the founding Director of the Africa Institute for Strategic Animal Resource Services and Development (AFRISA).
Professor Kabasa gained his PhD at Goettingen University in Germany and his veterinary medicine degree from Makerere University. He is a visiting Professor in a number of African and Western Universities. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he holds a variety of development positions in Uganda including: member of the Advisory Committee for the Implementation of the Africa Union Strategic plan for Animal Resources Development, national coordinator The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Council Chapter, national task force member on Avian Influenza , Chair of the National Biodiversity Committee for the National Environment Management Authority, Chair of the Agricultural and Water Resources Task Force on Climate Change. He is also the Chair of the Uganda Veterinary Board and the academic director of a number of regional and ACP research and training networks. Professor Kabasa plays leading roles in a number of public and private partnerships that draw together commercial, governmental and academic interests in public and ecosystem health, urban and rural economic development.



Prof. Mdegela received his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania in 1996, Master of Veterinary Science from Royal Agriculture and Veterinary School Copenhagen, Denmark in 1998 and PhD from Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, Oslo, Norway in 2006. He also holds Certificates in Molecular diagnostics, Fish Diseases and Pathology, Risk Analysis, Ecosystem Health, and Environmental Toxicology. He is a member of various institutional, national and international organizations that include Tanzania Veterinary Board (TVB), Sokoine University Academic Staff Association (SUASA), Tanzania Veterinary Association (TVA), Tanzania Association of Public, Occupational and Environmental Health Experts (TAPOHE) and Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), Wildlife Disease Association (WDA), Western Indian Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), The World Poultry Science Association (WPSA) (Tanzania chapter)and the Aquaculture Society for East Africa (ASEA). He is an active researcher in areas related to Ecotoxicology in particular endocrine disruptors, Phytomedicine (Natural products management and value chain addition); and bovine mastitis in bovine.
